What is DPT?

🎓A Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is a licensed healthcare professional with doctoral-level training in evaluating and treating pain, injury, and movement-related conditions.

The DPT is the highest entry-level degree in the physical therapy profession in the United States and reflects advanced education in human movement, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based care. Training includes extensive academic coursework and supervised clinical experience across a variety of healthcare settings.

🏅OCS stands for Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist.

It is a national board certification awarded to physical therapists who demonstrate advanced expertise in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including issues affecting the spine, joints, muscles, and movement systems.

To earn the OCS credential, a physical therapist must:

  • Hold an active physical therapy license

  • Complete significant advanced clinical experience in orthopedic care or an accredited orthopedic residency

  • Pass a comprehensive national board examination

  • Demonstrate advanced competence in:

    • Medical screening and differential diagnosis

    • Evidence-based treatment planning

    • Manual therapy and movement analysis

    • Imaging interpretation

    • Pain science and clinical decision-making

    • Risk assessment and appropriate referral

This certification reflects a high level of clinical knowledge, experience, and clinical reasoning in orthopedic physical therapy.

🏆FAAOMPT stands for Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

It is an advanced professional designation that reflects fellowship-level training in orthopedic physical therapy, clinical reasoning, and the management of complex musculoskeletal conditions.

To earn the FAAOMPT credential, a physical therapist completes an intensive post-doctoral fellowship program that includes:

  • Extensive one-on-one clinical mentorship and hands-on training

  • Advanced education in:

    • Manual therapy and movement assessment

    • Biomechanics and movement science

    • Pain science and nervous system function

    • Medical screening and differential diagnosis

    • Clinical reasoning and complex case management

    • Imaging interpretation

    • Evidence-based practice and research

This level of training typically requires several years beyond a doctoral degree and residency training and reflects a commitment to thoughtful, high-quality patient care.
